We often hear the term affirmations but often wonder what they are. These are nothing but the practice of positive thinking and self-empowerment. They help in fostering a belief that a positive mental attitude will achieve success. An affirmation is a statement that is repeated to one’s self and written down frequently. These statements help you re-program your thought patterns, they help you in changing your thoughts and beliefs.
The mind is our super computer. We must program it to behave as we would like it to. Affirmations work as it has the ability to program your mind into believing the stated concept. The fact is, the mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real or fantasy.
Coming to affirmations, there are both positive and negative types of affirmations. If we tell ourselves we shall do badly in an interview or event, we are bound to slip or fail. Similarly, if we tell ourselves, we shall succeed, we shall. Whatever else we do, most of us believe in hoping for the best outcome in all areas of life. This being the case, if we program it deeply in our soul, it tells the mind and the mind instructs the mind. Naturally, we must steer clear of negative affirmations as they can cause havoc in one’s life.
How do negative emotions enter our psyche. This happens through events over which we often have no control. For instance, very often a child is told by a teacher, parent or coach that he/she doesn’t the ability to do something, or he/she were too fat, clumsy, and so on. These statements can stay with us in the conscious or unconscious mind, and we then reinforce them throughout our lives. It is in fact documented even in the area of health that child abuse can turn out to be very damaging in later life.
In another context, if we believe we are not good at something because someone in our peer group said so, we shall remain doing badly. We must learn to steer clear of these as this is one of the worst things we can do to our own selves. In the gamut of negative thought, one of the worst that stalks many of us is ‘fear’.
We often get scared of so many things that we are very scared to think of anything positive happening in our lives. We avoid opportunities for success, and then when we fail, we just say to our own selves that I am not lucky or “it’s just not in my karma!”. This belief becomes deeply rooted in our unconscious mind and then has the ability to override a positive affirmation without us being even aware of it.
This is the primary reason it not working for some people. They are so convinced about negative thought patterns that it knocks out the effect of the positive statement. In fact, negative thoughts support illness and are a barrier to healing. It is only affirmations that can help us in removing this barrier.
Some steps we can take here are –
List negative thoughts:
Make a list of what you’ve always thought of as your negative qualities. This includes any criticisms others have made of you that we have been holding on to. It could be something our siblings, parents and peers used to say about you when you were a child, or what our boss said in the annual review. Don’t judge them. Just list them down so that we know what we have been hearing and thinking about for a while.
Flush out the negative
Tear the list, both physically and metaphorically. We must convince ourself that we are the driver of our own life and no one can make you us feel anything negative about ourself. This is definitely possible when we focus only on positive thoughts and loving ourselves.
Moving towards positive affirmations
Affirmations are the only solution to remove a negative thought. We need to add more muscle to an affirmation so that it has the power to triumph over our negative thinking by reading success stories, meeting positive people and telling ourselves we shall be in the group of people who remain successful in life. The success here does not refer to material success but the success of charting our own path in life.
Here, affirmations play a great role. Positive affirmations are much more than just feel good quotes and positive statements.
In put it differently, positive affirmations are statements that are spoken, and often repeated, to encourage and uplift the person speaking them.
The fact is, a positive affirmation is the language of the brain and self love, the creator of miracles.
Love, the antidote
Loving ourselves is something that is often neglected in an era where we always want to prove something to somebody. This is actually not required at all. We need to only prove our merit to our own selves, no one else. When we begin doing this, we shall understand that love is a natural state of being.
When we begin walking on the path of love, affirmations do indeed begin working We could write affirmations on our own self in the process making them powerful statements. We could keep telling ourselves something like “I am loved and cherished.”
When we do this, we shall see that affirmations are a powerful tool to help us to change our mood, state of mind and manifest the change we desire in our life. We could also work on visualising the working of the affirmations.
Visualization is a great tool and works in tandem with affirmations as we need to believe deeply that the affirmations shall work and visualize the new reality.
People nowadays use terms like law of attraction, the secret and so on, but essentially they all mean the same thing. We need to reprogram our mind to make things happen.
If we strive to use our imagination to change our deepest beliefs by vividly seeing, feeling and thinking about changing our beliefs, we shall indeed be rewarded with happiness, well being and confidence.
So, much so that very often, what was thought impossible became possible and this is often termed a ‘miracle’.
Making miracles happen
Miracles like most other things in life do not happen overnight. They manifest when they have been nourished.
We must believe in our own selves and in the power of love. It would help us to know that many people have healed themselves of chronic ailments and challenges through affirmations as they deeply believed they would heal.
This is because we are much more powerful than any machine or tablet. We have power beyond our imagination. Affirmations are the road to lead us to this powerful domain. When we take this step, life will show us many more directions, many more paths.
We need to keep repeating positive affirmations to our own selves and also keep visualising positivity all the time, so much so that affirmations become a part of our who we are.
This has happened for many people all over the world and it can and will happen when we start believing in our own selves completely. In the area of healing ourselves, whether from a physical ailment or emotional one, they work like magic. Let us all make positive affirmations a part of our lives and manifest miracles.
