A few years back, I learnt about oil pulling from two entirely different sources. One was from a friend who had read about in a Tamil magazine and had practiced it diligently for a few months, making it make her feel much better. Like many things, I just made a note of it and thought I will explore it further some time later.
Serendipitously, I attended a workshop on acupressure by Mr Ketan Shah, a wonderful healer. He also mentioned oil pulling was asked everyone to try this. I have and still have a lot of respect for Mr Shah, so immediately began practicing it.
Oil pulling is a simple, completely harmless, and inexpensive method of feeling better.
The phrase “oil pulling” and usage in its current form was popularized in early 1990s by one of the early adopters, Tummala Koteswara Rao in Bangalore, South India. Rao actively evangelized oil pulling as an ancient Ayurvedic practice.
Rao claimed to have been introduced to oil pulling by a paper presented by Fedor Karach to the All Ukrainian Association of the Academy of Science of the USSR in which he advocated a method of oil pulling. The paper is claimed to have been widely circulated in the German Magazines Natur & Heilen (Nature & Healing – author: Günther W. Frank) and, Natur und Medizin (Nature and Medicine – author: Veronica Carstens). It is further claimed, in the same paper, that Siberian shamans practised oil pulling with sunflower oil for more than a century.
How this is done
Oil-pulling therapy should be done early in the morning, on an empty stomach.
One needs to take a tablespoon of oil, preferably sunflower/sesame oil,
I use sesame oil. One needs to ensure we swish it so that it reaches all corners of the mouth. Swishing activates enzymes that help draw out the toxins in your body. One needs to do this for 20 minutes,
The benefits are many, some of which are
– Improved dental health and no bad breath
– Reduction of stiffness and joint pains
– Regular menstrual cycle
– Good skin
– Higher energy levels
Even in the area of multiple sclerosis, the ailment that I have been diagnosed with, it is supposed to be beneficial.
Speaking for myself, yoga, oil pulling, changes in diet, acupressure and acupuncture have been a tonic of wellness for me.
